Helen Waters and Hilary Topp share news of the recent Families’ Weekend at The Greenhouse, 19–21 June 2026.
52 Friends of all ages gathered for a third Quaker Families Weekend from the 19-21 June at The Greenhouse at Barnes Close, near Bromsgrove. Almost half of the participants were children aged 0-17, and there were families from three Area Meetings – Central England, Worcestershire and Shropshire and Gloucestershire.
The Families Weekends are a really important way to build community and help families feel part of the wider Quaker family.
“These weekends are so important for developing my sense of belonging to the Quaker community.”
“[Families weekend] is amazing, like a little retreat. The food is amazing. A lovely balance of activities and free time. It feels like a safe place for our children to play, explore and go on adventures together. So well organised and welcoming.”
It was a delight to be at The Greenhouse in summer and make full use of its beautiful grounds. The two alpacas were in their field rather than away for the winter, and watching them brought joy to many. The nearby tree swing proved popular, as did an area of laurel bushes that became an impressive den. The large grassy area provided space for games and flying stomp rockets. On Saturday evening there was a bonfire for the younger children followed by one for the older group. Bread twists were baked, marshmallows toasted, and songs sung.

The warm weather also allowed us to enjoy a picnic lunch on Saturday. The younger children walked to the playground at Waseley Hills, where the large circular swing was a particular highlight, accommodating eight children at one point! Afterwards, they took part in cooperative games and enjoyed playing with the parachute. The older children walked to the Lickey Hills Visitor Centre, with breaks for kite flying, games and ice cream.
Indoors, the craft table was as popular as ever, alongside a large jigsaw puzzle and games of Twister. Board games were enjoyed each evening, providing further opportunities for fun and friendship.
On Saturday afternoon, Hilary Topp facilitated a session for parents and carers, while Sunday morning included an all-age Meeting for Worship held outdoors.

Our excellent catering team—Cathy Khurana, Paula Button, Alex and Allie Martland—kept everyone well fed throughout the weekend. Their delicious meals were greatly appreciated, not least by parents and carers who welcomed a break from cooking.
The relaxed pace of the weekend gave both children and adults the opportunity to deepen existing friendships, form new connections, and enjoy being part of a wider Quaker community. Parents and carers also valued the chance to share experiences and exchange ideas about the joys and challenges of Quaker family life.
The Greenhouse has already been booked for the next Families’ Weekend, which will take place from 12–14 February 2027. Plans are also developing for a monthly online Quaker parents’ epilogue. Before then, some families will meet again at Britain Yearly Meeting in Manchester on 18 July. In addition, day events for 10–18-year-olds are planned for Saturday 5 September at Bewdley Meeting House and Saturday 7 November at Selly Oak Meeting House.
