Preparing for the Commonwealth Games

Final update, including six ways that Quaker Meetings can get involved.

The Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham, with events also taking place in Coventry, Sandwell, Warwick and Wolverhampton, from Thursday 28 July to Monday 8 August 2022. Birmingham Churches Together are preparing to use this opportunity, and Quaker Meetings are invited to join in.

Our project Peace Hub is highlighting peace & justice issues around the Commonwealth, including economic inequality, LGBTI+ rights, and human trafficking, in their theme Sharing Common Wealth? Friends are welcome to pop into the Hub between 11am and 5pm on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to find out more.

Birmingham Churches Together also suggest six ways in which churches (including Quaker Meetings) might like to use the Commonwealth Games as an opportunity for outreach and to highlight our social concerns:

  • Queen’s Baton Prayer Relay
  • It’s a Penalty (anti-trafficking campaign)
  • Blessing the Commonwealth Sat 16th July
  • Healing on the Streets
  • Service of Praise Sun 24th July
  • Two weeks of unbroken Worship and Prayer (starting Mon 25th July)
