Join Litchfield Quakers’ Street Theatre

Litchfield Quaker Meeting invite enthusiastic actors to join them for a street theatre project re-enacting George Fox’s visit to Lichfield in October 1651.

What is the production about?

George Fox was one of the founders of the Quaker movement and there is a plaque commemorating his visit to Litchfield on St Mary’s church in the market place there. Lichfield Quaker Meeting is very much supporting this historical re-enactment.

George was a travelling preacher and had argued with Magistrates and a Judge in Derby, at a time of great religious tension during the English Civil War.  George was sent to Derby Jail and was there for about a year. His visit to Lichfield was just after his release and some have argued he may have had PTSD. The visit was very dramatic as he thought he saw the blood of martyrs running through the streets.

What is the date of the Production?

We hope to link the play to circulating a leaflet about a picture of George Fox on display in The Hub at St Mary’s. The leaflet is still being drawn up, but it may be ready and printed by October.  Timing is for now uncertain.

What Commitment would I have to make?

You would need to attend probably  2 or 3 rehearsals and turn up for the performance. The play is  about 30 to 40 mins long. We would need to have at least one rehearsal in situ. We would also hope that you could put together an appropriate 17th century costume for yourself but we will help if needed. Travel and other basic expenses will be met.
