A round-up of events and actions for peace, being led by (or in partnership with) various Quaker bodies around Britain.

Hiroshima Day

A play ‘The Priest’s Tale’ remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki followed by poetry readings by peace poet Antony Owen can be watched online on Thursday 8th August 7.30-9.30pm. there is no fixed price but people are asked to give a donation if they can afford it. Anthony’s anthology ‘New Atomic Glossaries’ is one of the books of the month at the Quaker Bookshop.

Coventry Friends are supporting the Hiroshima Day service at Coventry Cathedral at 6pm on Tuesday 6th August.

In Birmingham there will be an event on Saturday 3rd August 11am in the Churchyard of St Philip’s Cathedral (aka Pidgeon park) B3 2QB. Readings of poetry and prose, lighting of a candle in remembrance and silent reflection. All Welcome.

Christian CND are asking people to make and send them an origami crane, which they will use in a piece of art to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the nuclear attacks next year. Instructions are available in a resource pack, along with a prayer and peace pledge.

Conscientious Objector Database

Northern Friends Peace Board are building a database of World War II conscientious objectors, and would like to hear stories that you have a connection to. Read more

Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice

21-28 September. This year’s theme: Divest from war – invest in climate justice. The week aims to raise awareness of the connections between war, militarism and climate breakdown. It also seeks to draw together individuals and organisation working in the often separate worlds of peace and climate justice so that they might see how their goals overlap and collaborate on them. Quakers in Britain are part of an international coalition of organisations involved in planning this.

Woodbrooke course Linking Climate Justice and Demilitarisation

The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-20:30 (UK time) on Wednesday 7 August and Tuesday 10 September. In this two-part exploratory space, held in partnership with Quaker Peace and Social Witness, we will delve into the links between militarism and climate and explore how re-envisaging these challenges is necessary for shaping a safer, fairer world. Peace Pilgrimage

Monday 9th – Saturday 14th September 2024. The SDSC Arms Fair is taking place in Telford in November. In witness against this event, Peace Pilgrimage, supported by our project Peace Hub, Stourbridge Quaker Meeting and several individual Friends, are organising a pilgrimage for peace.
